Anambra bans alternative medical practitioners from performing surgery, advertising

The Anambra State Government on Thursday banned alternative medical practitioners in the state from advertising and performing surgical operations.

The state added that it had put measures in place to flush out quacks among practitioners of alternative medicine in the state.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Josephat Akabuike, stated this at a workshop for members of the National Complementary and Alternative Medical Association in Awka, the state capital.

Akabuike, who was represented by the director of medical services in his ministry, Dr Azubuike Nweje, said the state ministry of health had listed hospitals practising alternative medicine, regretting that there were still some quacks parading themselves as alternative medical practitioners in the state.

He said, “Just like the orthodox medicine, which is controlled by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, alternative medical practitioners are not allowed to advertise in any form, be it electronic or print media.

“It is, therefore, regrettable that some alternative medical practitioners are engaged in all forms of self-advertising, which will no longer be tolerated because those involved in it after obtaining their certificate, will have their certificates withdrawn.”

He said surgery was never part of alternative medicine, advising those who felt they had qualification to perform surgery to present such to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for vetting.

He warned that any alternative medical practitioner involved in any surgical practice would be prosecuted by the state government.

He said, “It is compulsory for all the alternative medical practitioners in the state to come to the ministry of health to be listed. It is also necessary that practitioners must belong to the National Association of Alternative Medical Practitioners.”
