Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins, on Tuesday, shot dead a revenue collector in Delta State identified as Mr Solomon Okene, popularly known as Oghene.
The gunmen attacked Okene, who worked with the Warri South Local Government Council, around 12.45pm.
Southern City News gathered that the incident occurred at the Iyara junction, off Cemetery Road, Warri.
It was learnt that the gunmen wore masks and shot Okene dead before shooting indiscriminately in order to scare the residents.
As of the time of filing this report, policemen from the ‘A’ Division in Warri had taken over the area, while the remains of Okene had been evacuated and deposited in a morgue.
The Chairman of the Warri South Local Government Area, Dr Michael Tidi, confirmed the incident in a chat with our correspondent.
Tidi expressed sadness over the death of the revenue collector, saying, “It is a sad story. The killing of Mr Solomon Okene is shocking to me. He was such an efficient man.”
When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke, said the visit received a call from his killers in order to ascertain his whereabouts.
Adeleke added that it was after ascertaining Okene’s exact location that the assailants came to him, collected his phone and shot him dead before they fled.
