The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Enyinna Ibekwe, for allegedly stealing his niece’s child.
The suspect also shot the unnamed child’s mother, Chidinma Anyanwu.
A statement issued in Owerri, the state capital, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the incident happened on July 7 at Onicha in Ezinihite Mbaise Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson, who said that the suspect was in police custody, disclosed that he escaped after shooting the mother of the girl.
He said that the mother of the girl had demanded the child from the suspect, but was shot when he promised to take her to where her daughter was.
The statement said, “On July 7, one Enyinna Ibekwe, 50, male, a native of Umueleagwa Onicha, Ezinihite Mbaise LGA, collected the child belonging to his niece, one Chidinma Anyanwu.
“He (suspect) went out with the child. On his return, he did not come back with the child. When the said Chidinma demanded her child, he asked her to follow him to get her child.
“He took her to a lonely place and shot her in the chest, thinking she was dead. He abandoned her beside a borrow pit and left.
“She, however, found her way to the road and was rescued to the police station and subsequently to Oriegbu hospital, where she is responding to treatment.”
The Command further disclosed that Enyinna Ibekwe (suspect) had since been arrested and detained. It added that they were being investigated.
