Kpakor dismisses Cameroon threat

Against all odds, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Sunday in Libreville defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 to win their fifth Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Following the feat, most Nigerians are of the view that the victory in Gabon will spur the Lions to put up a strong fight against the Super Eagles when they meet in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in August.

While Cameroon have drawn their first two matches, the Super Eagles have recorded a hundred percent run so far beating Zambia and Algeria.

But unlike most Nigerians who have been gripped by fear of the Indomitable Lions, Kpakor said the World Cup qualifiers are a different ball game and the Eagles won’t misuse the advantage they have earned so far.

“The world Cup qualification is a different ball game and different mentality.

“The Super Eagles are in good position in the table and good shape at the moment.

“Of course, an AFCON win will try to give Cameroon a psychological boost, but it will be short-lived.

“I mean, it’s difficult to transfer an AFCON confidence into a competition you are poorly positioned or motivated. The thing to do is beat Cameroon in Nigeria, even with the slightest margin and I can assure you we are already in Russia,” he said.

Kpakor therefore advised coach Gernot Rohr not to over-tinker with the present Super Eagles squad, saying the coach should not attempt to use every available Nigerian player.

He advised Rohr to maintain the existing team spirit and understanding that has propelled the Eagles to the two important victories in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“The coach should not be tempted to introduce many new players into the team simply because we have players of Nigerian parents scattered all over Europe.

“Let’s use players that have experienced African football. After we qualify then the coach can now go on a shopping spree for players in Europe door to door, asking if their parents were Nigerians,” he advised.
